  1. I know it's not a steam loco but the LIMA GWR diesel rail car is steam era and is very strong given the fact the prototype was only meant to pull one coach. Mine can generally pull 5 to 6 coaches with ease. If you need to fit a DCC chip they are probably one of the simplest to hard wire. They generally sell for around £40 on eBay including postage so not too expensive, just make sure it still has the couplings as some people used to take them off.
  2. My Hattons Genesis GWR 4 and 6 wheeled coaches have just arrived. Very nice models which look particularly nice alongside my Hornby GWR 4 wheelers which are just that little bit different to represent the variety that were so typical of the time they were in service.
  3. I bought a black 9F that wouldn't run at all even after a good clean as you describe. However, I found that the brass connecting pin on the tender and the phosphor bronze pickups on the draw bar which are supposed to touch the brass pin on the tender were very tarnished. After polishing the pin and pickups the loco began to move erattically, but after a lot more cleaning it now runs very well.
  4. Who knows, people may have had it on pre-order but were let down like I was when I ordered the Hornby ROD J36. I waited several years only to find there was not enough allocated to the store.
  5. Very nice Vespa, I might do the same with mine once I've found the sepia wash. Do the larger wheels affect the coupling or body height noticeably?
  6. I hope you will forgive this off topic posting but it is with great sadness that I learned of the death of Queen Elizabeth II. My thoughts and wishes go out to His Majesty the King and the rest of the Royal family for the tragic loss of their mother, grandmother and great grandmother. I hope others will join in this sentiment.
  7. Just cleaning up a rake of maroon Mk1s and trying to reinstate the original; type wheels
  8. I too have wondered this, I had assumed they were blank destination boards. I had not noticed they were of unequal length so I now have doubts.
  9. Currently a Bachmann BR cattle wagon awaiting a short length of wire to replace one of the bars that fell off. I have about a dozen of these and at least half dropped one of these rails when removed from the box - always the one to the left of the doors. - anyone elso noticed this?
  10. I have a couple of questions about these models which I think were introduced at about the same time I got my first Train Set - mid 1970s? The first is was the only difference between the silver seal model and the ordinary ones the metal rimmed wheels fitted to the silver seal models. The second is did any of the all over maroon Mk1 coach bodied coaches (BR not LMS) with pale blue interiors and round metal buffer heads have silver seal wheels from new or would they have been too early - The BR ones I remember seeing at the time being in Blood and custard or blue and grey only
  11. Hopefully others will give a more fuller response but where ever you store them needs to be dry, I have several Lima Diesels and a couple of Saints dating back to the 1990s which spent some of their storage in a garage. Although this was relatively waterproof it was damp enough to cause the pick-up strips to tarnish which meant they had toi be cleaned up before they ran. The lubricating oil also thickened. Although they cleaned up OK it was a lot of work and I would be worried that the the way the finer pickups are tucked away in modern models might make them harder to clean. Regarding your Hall, I have a couple of these and a B12 (ssme mechanism) that had been stored badly. Thankfully they were easy to strip down and clean up using IPA (to dissolve the congealed oil so hopefully there is hope for your hall yet! As a thought you will need to test the track on your layout as you build it so it might be worth keeping the locos to hand taking it in turns to use them as the test loco.
  12. Funnily enough I once had the issue in question (given to me when an enthusiast was clearing out) sadly it was stored in a damp place when we were having building works done about a decade ago so was destroyed. I have now ordered another for about £3 on ebay so should have it in a couple of days.
  13. Many thanks that's perfect
  14. I too would like the extra coaches but I've already bought two extra Pullmans to rename, just trying to find my Pullman transfers. Once I've done this I'm sure Hornby will introduce them!

  16. From memory does LNER Silver Link appear at the very beginning before some mishap results in Will Hay being transferred to the far off Irish outpost where he cannot do any damage!
  17. A few years ago I purchased the Bachmann WW1 commemorative loco ROD number 1918 and want to find out more about it. I know that one of there four surviving RODs was cosmetically restored to carry this number to commemorate the centenary of the end of WW1, but this was not its original ROD number. My question therefore is, does anyone know if a Robinson ROD ever carried the number 1918 during WW1 and where did it operate or have I got a "modern image" Australian Locomotive? PS I have been through various lists but there seems to be gaps.
  18. I have used the original Relco track cleaner on my original layout (in the 1980s) and gauge master ones on my current 009 Analog section of my current layout without any problems but none of the locos used on the systems had traction tyres. However, I found that theHF cleaners seem better for keeping clean wheels and track clean rather than cleaning dirty rails. On DCC I invested in a DAPOL track cleaning wagon which travels in a train with an old Triangle track Cleaning wagon (suitably re-wheeled for modern track) and I find there combination quite satisfactory. So this might work for analog 00 layouts.

  22. I still have some crushed coal left that came from two lumps I picked up at the foot of the coaling stage at Didcot in around 1977!. I broke it up using a normal hammer while in a thick polyethylene bag to stop bits flying. However, as an aside having filled four my 009 coal wagons up with coal and the rest with granite, I decided I needed one more coal wagon, so simply painted the coarse granite ballast in one black - it works that well than I cannot be sure which was the repaint!
  23. In my case it is just a question of taste and I would probably feel the same about the real one if I could find a photo on the net. However, it is well out of my modelling period so no chance of me buying one. However, at least it is an authentic Platinum Jubilee souvenir loco since the real thing does exist.
  24. I would advise against salt as many railway items will have steel in their construction, even if it is only a spring, since salt will promote corrosion.
