Some progress has been made on the Zero but I missed the opportunity to upload some photo's last week before the Bank Holiday weekend so this might be a bit of a catch up session.

The cocpit was contructed and a little bit of research indicated the interior colour to be a dark grey/green and RLM02 was suggested to be a good match. Some gunmetal grey dry brushing and a panel wash was used to highlight the detail in the cockpit and fuselage walls.

I don't think I have ever painted a Japanese pilot before, as my last IJN/IJA aircraft must have been over 20 years ago. Anyway again I have tried to use autehentic colour matches.

Sadly some ankle surgery was required to fit into the flight office  🤔. But after a couple of days to complete the cockpit and pilot the main airframe could be completed.

The fuselage halves fitted well around the cockpit, but care needs to be taken with the front cowling cover and MG breech parts. Do not allow the nose section to harden before fitting the front cowling part or you will have problems getting the breeches into the small access. More photo's to follow ........

Another update to try and catch up .......

The main airframe is now complete, but when I came to mask the canopy which I had intended to do myself, I found the frame marks very delicate and soft, so with a lot of curved windows I found it impossible to mask by hand, so I had to give in and order a mask of the internet. Unfortunately this was on Good Friday so with the long weekend will probably be Thursday before i get it delivered. But I pressed on with the build, and the whole canopy was masked to protect it whilst I got on with the spraying.

Looks like I forgot to take a photo of the underside surfaces at this stage but they were sprayed with Vallejo IJA Grey Green which actually is a very light beige/cream colour and looks very authentic.

/media/tinymce_upload/f12e9d707848e5590b950da3560c5874.jpg

The top surfaces have been sprayed with Vallejo IJN Black Green. I had a few IJA/IJN colours and tested a few before I decided on the colours I used and I thought were best as I didn't feel the recommended Airfix paints of Hu 75 (Matt Bronze Green) & Hu 90 (Matt Beige Green) were quite right.

The main airframe is complete now so I have started the decaling and engine assembly as I didn't want to stall the build while waiting for the canopy mask!

@ Elkhart

Thanks for your comments. Must just be luck with the instrument panels, I normal paint the panel face in silver before applying the decal so the lighter decal colours don't get drowned, then I use setting solution to ensure the silvering edge of the decal moulds round the edge of the panel. Sometimes I add a gloss cote to the panel faces but I didn't on this occasion!

I still use Humbrol enamels for my crew figures and some detail work but for the main areas and airframes I now spray using Vallejo Model Air paints which have a good range of authentic colours, but after decades of using Humbrol products its sometimes trail and error getting the correct colour.

But my canopy mask arrived yesterday so hopefully I'll be able to put it to use tonight ☺

The Vallejo Model Air Paint Sets are authentic and give you most of the colours you will need for a given theme in the 1 set.

And over the past couple of days the decals were added and sealed with another coat of Klear gloss coat.

But the pilot is a little too exposed ...........

What he really needs is a canopy?

Only some finishing toucheds left to do over the next couple of nights!

Hi T2B

Just for fun here's some pics of Japanese Naval pilots gleamed from the internet. Quite a variation. And a pair of boots.

The Zero's coming on nicely should look good chasing the Blenium.

@ JS

Thanks JS those images are useful for my next Japanese aircrew. I did some research myself and came up with the colours I used which don't seem to far off the mark after seeing your images. Apart from a slightly oriental looking face the pilot figure is pretty much generic Airfix fare, with a large Mae West. You can only work with the tools your given lol.

But thanks and hope you like the latest update on the Zero. It should be finished over the weekend but photos won't be moderated till Monday

Progress over the weekend has seen the Zero finished ....

And I think the canopy mask was worth the investment as I think it has turned out very well!

Next final installment will be the Zero displayed chasing the Blenheim at low level over the jungle canopy  😀!

Hi T2B.

Great pristine looking A6M2. You're right the canopy looks great and the masks was a worth while investment. That canopy is so clear that the pilot is clearly visible, great job. I see you didn't try for the wavy demarcation line on the fuselage. I had a simular problem with the Airfix Fw 190 where the grey under side colour goes over the leading edge. I solved that by cutting a mask from vinyl masking tape, using the Airfix profile enlarged to 1/72 scale to make a template. I'll do a posting when I've taken some photos.

Looking foreward to seeing the final chase result.

Thanks John. It is weathered a bit so not totally pristine but with the dark colours doesn't show so well in the photo's. And with the wavey demarcation line I should get each side to match or be vaguely similar with my masking methods so I had to simplify it ☺!

My wife used to make her own Christmas Cards.  She bought scissors with various cutting patterns to make decorative edges.  The scallop shaped scissors made a pretty good approximation of the wavy pattern on the masking tape when I painted my Zero.  And both sides were close enough to identical.

Could this be the final installment?

Both the Blenheim and Zero are now finished and displayed on the 'dogfight double' stand and ready to take their place on my display shelves  😀

I have just started a 'real pig' of an old tool kit and it makes you realise how lovely these new tool kits are, not just in the additional authentic detail but how well they go together despite the increase in the parts count. The kit is a very rare journey for me from the Airfix stable so I'll not be able to post it here, but its an unusul aircraft to add to my early luftwaffe collection.

Thats it for now, I hope you have enjoyed my double build of these lovely new Airfix kits!
