LCDR Posted February 18, 2018 Share Posted February 18, 2018 A very interesting collection of early models, I bought the original tender drive gloss model with moulded handrails and still have it although I did lightly weather it. The special edition model R301 is curious, 92220 was built in 1960 and appeared in the post 1957 livery with the later crest, so technically the tender should not carry the lion on unicyle badge which was discontinued in 1956. I travelled behind the real 92220 from Paddington to Eastleigh and from Three Bridges back to Paddington in 1964 on an Ian Allen railtour to Eastleigh works and Southampton Docks Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

NRM states it had a BRb crest.The date is unknown.no production number.It also lists Sp. VESPA Posted February 18, 2018 Share Posted February 18, 2018 I got one as a 21st B'Day present in '73 and it was my 1st home conversion to 3 Rail. A very nice loco with the traction tyres and tender drive. It hauled quite a bit of rolling stock unlike the Type 2 D5572, which I bought a set of Airfix mineral wagons to pull. (kits)Regarding the crests, the tender tops were probably a batch from the Britannia class fitted in error but not reworked and just put on sale. new lad on block Posted February 18, 2018 Author Share Posted February 18, 2018 Hi, Just been checking,my first thought perhaps a surplus Iron Duke tender from 1975 ish.They are not lined thougth.As one of the NRM was produced 1983,I must assume the other R301 is around the same time.Checked Britannias,earliest BRb crest, was R190, Britannia,made 1992. LCDR Posted February 18, 2018 Share Posted February 18, 2018 I find it remarkable that the NRM and Hornby let this one slip through although the NRM did in fact display the J36 with the early emblem on its tender the wrong way round (lion facing the rear) in the station hall for a couple of years. The fourth model and the Crosti. Even though they are Railroad, they have a 5 pole skew-wound motor, are DCC ready (except for R3396TTS), and are loco drive.Unfortunately I donot know the spec of the 'other side'.Perhaps some other member whom may have both, would perform a tug-of-war.
