Stencils and main markings
Frederick Kullas replied to Ratch's topic in Humbrol (Techniques, Tips & Craft)
Certain stencils must not be covered by other markings. If national markings or letters obliterate the stencil the stencil must be re-instated. Take a Spitfire as an example; the trestle markings under the wings on early Spitfires was over the roundel. W/T markings were stenciled back on over the fin flash et cetera. So, main markings first and stencils on top -
Interior green paint code
Frederick Kullas replied to Andrew-350187's topic in Humbrol (Techniques, Tips & Craft)
Humbrol doesn't do a match in spray cans. You may find a similar colour in the car spray paints in a car accessories shop. Halfords if you are the UK. The two most popular colours are Humbrol 78 and Humbrol 120. Take painted samples of these to the shop to find a match -
Humbrol paint 106
Frederick Kullas replied to Chris-348242's topic in Humbrol (Techniques, Tips & Craft)
Even if he was, Airfix could still have told him they have it in the acrylic bottle -

Small decal fix
Frederick Kullas replied to Antony-1216856's topic in Humbrol (Techniques, Tips & Craft)
I use a size 2 flat paint brush and plenty of water on the model surface to help the decal move around into place. Then dab away excess water with a piece of tissue -
Pledge Floor Polish
Frederick Kullas replied to PhantomBucca's topic in Humbrol (Techniques, Tips & Craft)
I use 'Astonish' floor 'polish'. The same as the famous Kleer. You can usually find 'Astonish' in Home Bargains for about £1 for a 750ml bottle. I've been using it for nearly 10 years now. Not just to varnish models but on my leather work and antler handled knifes -

Humbrol dropper bottles
Frederick Kullas replied to gazdadude's topic in Humbrol (Techniques, Tips & Craft)
I have some of the very first batch, bought about 2 years ago. No sign of them drying out. I'll only wish they would. The paints are air-brush thin and if/when they start to dry out they might become more brushable -
WWI aircraft - gloss or matt finish?
Frederick Kullas replied to null_null981707818191's topic in Aircraft
Matt looks better but the paints were gloss and French paints, after 1915, were actually 'metallic' looking as the lead binder was replaced by aluminium. The lead being required for bullets Gloss paint was common, matt paint was hardly known. As most aircraft were painted using the same types of paints as on cars of the time gloss was the normal -
Properly named the S-boat it was last in the Airfix range about 7 years ago

I think the glass is only specific to that kit. I think the idea of the glass comes from the end of the film 'Ice cold in Alex'

Painting error on the Wellington Bomber
Frederick Kullas replied to Scout_Wings's topic in Humbrol (Techniques, Tips & Craft)
When I visited Brooklands many years ago I was shown a large piece of the fuselage fabric from the Wellington they were restoring at the time. It was painted black on the inside -
As far as I remember none of the small scale Airfix tanks come with figures The German Armoured Car has three figures The 88mm gun and Halftrack has some crew figures as does the Bren Gun Carrier and the 25lb Gun and Quad You don't have to use any photo-etch if you don't want to. The photo-etch is only to supplement the kit parts but you can just not use the p-e

As per title; the enamels are back on the Airfix / Humbrol website pages

Incorrectly specified paints
Frederick Kullas replied to FBS's topic in Humbrol (Techniques, Tips & Craft)
What I think has happened; in the past Airfix used to list all of the paints which were needed. Then if a certain paint was out of stock it was marked up as 'out of stock' but still in the list. With the removal of the enamels from the Airfix website and only acrylics available only the acrylics which are needed for the kit are listed, The acrylics range does not have all the same colours as the enamels range. But the enamels are still listed and their prices are against the kit. imo it all needs sorting out to clean up the listings -
Humbrol enamels.
Frederick Kullas replied to Harry-661354's topic in Humbrol (Techniques, Tips & Craft)
As of a couple of weeks ago my LMS claims he was getting his regular orders of Humbrol enamel, as well as the acrylics. And he has heard nothing either officially nor unofficially about not selling Humbrol paints. As part of the EU still they do enforce their regulations here. His racks of paint were as full as normal last time I was in. I might be back there next Tuesday to get some paints so I'll see how his paint stock is According to him, and he is often about 80% correct on info, this directive is aimed at car/automotive paints and not model paints -
Humbrol enamels.
Frederick Kullas replied to Harry-661354's topic in Humbrol (Techniques, Tips & Craft)
Yes. I use enamel on top of acrylic and acrylic on top of enamel. I often use an enamel as a base coat then use the acrylic version on top of it. As for the other topic on here; my LMS has full racks of Humbrol enamel and he says he still gets his orders [an order about one every two weeks] -
Advice on superglue/poly cement
Frederick Kullas replied to Jay 1707822856's topic in Humbrol (Techniques, Tips & Craft)
you can buy odour free superglue -
I think - if its an Airfix fault, eg a mis-moulded or missing part in a new kit, there is no charge but if the kit is 2nd hand or you lost the part then Airfix charge for the part and postage eg. I have an Aston Martin DB5 which bought direct from Airfix several years ago. When I opened the kit to build just last year it I found that the body shell was mis-moulded. Airfix sent me a replacement body upon request. In the past I have paid for parts missing from older kits which were not new

If you are in the UK go into Poundland In the beauty and health section there is a certain battery operated tool for about £1. With summer coming, in the hardware section you may find a battery operated personal cooling fan for about £1. Buy one of these and pull it apart and you'll get a small electric motor which can run on 1.5v to about 12v. You'll also get a switch and battery contacts Similar items can be found in Home Bargains and Poundstretcher, but at a slightly dearer price

Poundstretcher sells an 'angle poise' style light for £17.99. It takes an E14 fit bulb I bought similar ones through ebay for £9.99 each [inc postage] but that was a few years ago. Have a laugh on me; I thought I'd buy another light for one of my other desks. I didn't want to pay the Poundstretcher price so I found a similar light unit but with a LED light bar fitted on ebay. Inc postage £13.98. I didn't read the details about the light unit. It needs a USB power plug. I've had to buy that, at £3.90. Total = £17.88. A saving of 11 pence!

Multputt 2 Part Epoxy Resin
Frederick Kullas replied to Airfix81mode's topic in Humbrol (Techniques, Tips & Craft)
Is it Milliput? Try soaking the dried up part in a tub with a small amount of water. Lay the tube shape lengthways in a small pot and pour just a little cold water over it. Seal it up and leave for a few days. This may soften it a bit
