I've a long way to go to before my layout is finished to get any decent photos, but coincidently I have been messing around with a tiny digital camera I got off eBay for around £15. For what its worth here's the link - http://www.flickr.com/photos/16721965@N07/12150975233/

The subject should be self explanatory :)

Very entertaining! That camera was well worth it, wasn't it? Excellent pictures and editing superb. You couldn't have had better background music either, could you? Some of that straight track seems to be just a bit bent, though. Worth using a long straight

edge to lay straights. Very well done. I wish you success and lots of enjoyment developing things.

I started my layout late October 2013 on 9mm plywood base and after a few week decided it wasn't right for me. I then stripped everything off and started again but this time with 50mm cavity wall insulation on top of

the 9mm plywood so that I can carve downwards and build upwards but still have all track on one level.

Being restricted for space as many of us are I decided to have my layout 8x4 (which then gained a little to 4'6" wide top half and 4' bottom half

nearest camera) on legs over a single divan bed.

Not a big layout but.....
I wanted to have assorted routes (5 ovals) 3 stations and two sets of 5 sidings. I know I cannot have large rakes of carriages but the layout will give me what I want.

-

ample running between stations using bye-pass sections to lengthen the runs.
- sidings although small I can do shunting and fiddling
- a scenic layout that I can craft and enjoy making with a river, a fishing lake, a windy road that rises and falls in

level, walling, paths, housing and a small industrial area.

A bit of a challenge, yes for me, as I am disabled and am limited how far I can hobble around. I cannot stand for long but can do things in bits and sit in front of my layout and laptop and

'ENJOY'

It is early stages yet but here we have three months work, there is lots to do. I am starting at the lower carved out level and gradually working up to track level. I will then start on hills and tunnel at the far end and am working on wiring

and switching lighting for a burger bar, cars, street and housing lights and later stations will be built and lighted as well.

Here is a few months work.

1 - The layout base over a single divan bed.

2

- plan prepared with Hornby Trackmaster software
http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/gallery/image/57041-140119-plan-new-layout-hornby-trackmaster/

3 - Cacivty wall insulation, 50mm glued with Copydex and river cut out.

4

- Starting to lay track, cork and track stuck down with Copydex
http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/gallery/image/57043-start-to-lay-track/

5 - Cut out and prepare windy road, station car park and area for small industrial estate. Housing

will go on green banked area to right. Lake started to raised area on left.
http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/gallery/image/57047-cut-out-lay-road-walls-lake/

6 - 3 months down and it is starting to take shape, green emulsion is only to

make it look the part for now grass will be laid in time
http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/gallery/image/57053-3-months-done-road-to-station-to-weather/

7 - Fishing lake is coming together. Reeds now in, Realistic water now in and it even

has some specimen carp! Lily's and bull rushes next step.
http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/gallery/image/57051-lake-island-140120/

Hope you like, comments welcome, good or bad. please bear in mind it is early stages and there is lots

more to do. I appreciate it is not for everyone, we all have our ideas and projects that best suit us. This is for me, I have crammed a lot in there but hopefully it won't look cluttered. The control point is the bottom left near the river estuary, if I spill

my drink I can blame the river ;-)

I HAVE BEEN BUSY SINCE THE ABOVE WAS ADDED

There are now 28 imaqes to share, I am not adding all these just click one of the links below then browse the gallery at RMWeb. You may need an account at RMWeb

to view them, this is very easy to do and is a forum worth joining with lots of help and advise (PLUS images which really does help)

on an 8ft x 4ft (hinged- with clearance of 130mm) this is what I'm currently working on:

http://trainsetinvain.tumblr.com/post/76312945674/hornby-double-loop-layout

Two major issues, flexitrack and a tight curve (I thought it would be alright

on the night!) and a first radius curve which I intend to run a tiny loco with freight on).

My next step is a third loop that will come off the grand suspension bridge (or similar) top left of this plan and make its way UNDER the baseboard, returning

to the inside loop somewhere. To allow for large locos (Flying Scotsman) to speed across a grand bridge.

I'm with RAF96 on Hornby allowing posting of images. Perhaps the community (trusted posters) could help moderate?

Hi Callum

I hope it all works lout for you. I notice a reverse loop that will require a reverse loop module and isolation points (if you have not yet done this)

First degree radius should be avoided at all costs especially

with gradients.

Gradients should be 1:50 so to obtain 3" you need 150" I am not sure you have this length.

I am sure others will comment on radius one curves and gradients.

When I initially designed my layout, not many moons ago, I included

a raised area which started in the bottom right as you look at it and ran anti clockwise raising 3" in just under 150" the line ran over the top (yours runs under neath as I understand it) the loop would go full circle over everything initially on a hill then

a large bridge across the layout but, meeting the initial track on the opposite side with a large bridge across. This meant the raised track loop was all 3" high and the rise and fall track was 150" approx. I also considered another similar option to loop

under the board and have a set of stock sidings beneath but again I changed my mind. Why you may ask. Firstly a lot of experienced people on the forum warned me of the problems I could experience, secondly a bridge across, although nice, blocked my view of

track behind it. Thirdly on a board the size you are using, mine is 7' 6" by 4' 6" I realised to have the raised track I was sacrificing the amount of working track I could have. I have in effect moved from a couple of loops plus a raised one to five linking

loops on one level.

Instead of raised track I decided to vary the levels of ground. Train track in real life bends left and right to miss hills (or goes through them) but in general most of it maintains a level the fields and roads go up and down but

in general not the track. I therefore stripped everything I had done and started again. I stuck 50mm cavity wall insulation to the 9mm board and laid my track on cork on this. I then carved into the insulation to make lower levels and eventually will add hills

and a tunnel at one end when I get to it.

I do not say what I did was right, but it was right for me, I feel I have ended up with a better layout which should have less problems long term.

Take a look at the images in the gallery at RMweb, there

are 32 so far but the layout is still being built I have lots more still to do. I have included 3 links below:

http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/gallery/image/57412-6-new-houses-cut-into-hill-front-view/

http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/gallery/image/57414-6-new-houses-cut-into-hill-ariel-view/

Good

luck what ever you decide.

Hi Steve

Excellent filming and the music set the atmosphere well.

I have seen these cameras used on the Pete Waterman layout films on YouTube, you did well with

it, do you have the info. for the camera (and any other parts/info. for using it)

Wow, thank you so much for the

input. Yes there are a lot of issues with that layout- in particular inclines and that nasty 1st radius! But I've been very lucky with the gradients so far. I've not built any serious scenery and I'm currently just laying things out and experimenting. I will

bookmark this thread and return to your words when I sit down and pin out the final design. I'm amazed at how insightful these forums are. Thank you very much.

I HAVE BEEN BUSY

There are 3 new imaqes to browse in the gallery at RMWeb.

1 - GONE FISHING!

http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/gallery/image/58019-fish-lake-its-time-to-try-it-out/

Static grass has been added to the river

banks (other images)

The image above is an update to the fishing lake. Grass has been added to the meadow area, randomly laid using Noch 1.5, 2.5, 5, 6 and 12mm, spring and summer grasses mixed together to look like a meadow and to look random. Noch

Gras-Master 2 used.

Fishermen are eagerly awaiting the big catch of the day.

I still have wild flowers and weeds to add to the grasses, fencing and trees.

I think it is starting to come together.

Fascinating developments, PJ. I used to fish many years ago. Wish I could be one of those little anglers!

Hi Graskie

I love fishing but due to my disability cannot fish in many places now. Very few fisheries

cater for people who are disabled, I can only hobble short distances, I use my power wheel chair to get around outside but it is unsafe at the side of a lake. I am looking to find a lake that will allow cars up to the side and have a seat safe enough and high

enough. I cannot go for big carp I cannot lift them but would love to fish.

I took up model trains, firstly because I have always liked them but secondly because it gives me something to do that I enjoy.

We have to keep the mind going and be

as occupied as we possibly can as we get older.

Those anglers by the lake are Noch figures, I do think they are under scale not 00

Hi Graskie

I have measured those little anglers!

Noch, supposed to be 00 gauge but are smaller.

I estimate man to be 3 foot tall.

I have some die cast ones, measured they are 00 so have started to paint them. I will add them once they are ready. I think they will look better being larger and I will be able to add fuse wire for the rod and line

to make them look realistic. I got a butterfly catcher as well, may sound strange here but he is walking with a large net, I will paint him and make him so he is walking to his mate to catch that big carp. Lucky chap.

A peaceful day by the fishing lake...

One

guy peacefully fishing near the lilies.

Another guy running to his mate with the net, here comes the fisherman's tale... it's a big one.

The rod bends and the line takes the strain as the fish takes the bate and tries to run with it. What a stir!

Hope

you like it. Hope he lands it ;-)

NEXT images will include Hornby SkaleScenic trees and more.

Wonderful scene, PJ. You're to be congratulated on this fascinating scenario. Being an ex coarse fishing afic(fish!)ianodo, though, I think that the line should be a bit straighter (taught) to that large carp. Times I sat by the lily pads for tench and

carp! Anyway, why don't the fisherman just wade into that tiny pond and pick the fish out by hand (lol)?

I miss my fishing, out in the country, peace and quiet, no traffic, kingfishers flying like darts for the small

fish, watching swans and seeing a sygnet fly for the first time, wonderful.

When I was a kid I did sea fishing off Morecambe Bay. We would go to Sandside and near Grange on the north side, treading for flatty's, that was a strange sensation, walking

the sand in the shallow waters, I mean mud. See a flat fish and stand on it to catch it. They didn't half flip, just had to be careful they had a hooked bone on their top edge. I prefer course fishing though, especially carp, tench, bream, but a day on roach,

rudd, perch, crucians etc can be good also.

Thanks for your comments Graskie, it is more of creating the scene, how it looks when seen as you walk in 'my'

room. I am working with my first batch or trees now, Hornby, SkaleScenics, they look really good. Made in Vietnam! I'll get my first 6 in place then get some more.

I have another image to share which now includes,

a lady sat in the park with her children.

Plus 3 deciduous trees and 3 sycamore trees

They are Hornby Skale Scenic trees they are really nice trees.

The

dark green branch ones are also Hornby, not sure if I will leave them or experiment and make them gauze bushes.

I hope you like them, I certainly recommend the Hornby Skale Scenic trees they would look good on any layout.

Fishing scene is great PJ. I have a bloke fishing on my canal. I did have line on the rod but it didn't look right. Fishing line is pretty fine stuff and at a scale of 1:76 pretty much invisible.

Think I shall have to go fishing again soon, haven't

been for over a year. How much is a day ticket on your layout?

Hi WTD, thanks for your comments.

I have altered the fisherman since I took the picture you see in the gallery. There is a long bend in the

line (fuse wire) in the image, now there is a nice bend in the rod and a almost straight line to the fish. It looks more like it should.

I painted the fishing rod with blue enamel paint, it toned it down well, I might use a dilutes light yellow for

the line it will take the shine off it.

There is a lot going on though, you probably saw bits in the image. The cars have head and tail lights, I have street lights as well but am just finishing the positions of them and will have lights in the houses

also (separate bus for lighting). At present none are wired in, I have a set of 15 switches these are all wired and soldered and the jack plug position for the power is also done. The wires are all hanging down waiting for me to finish what I am doing then

they can all be connected up.

I have plastic straws coming up through the base and insulation board into the houses and under station platforms, I will wire to these positions soon then add the light to the platforms later. Once I have the board lifted

all the lighting wire should be done in one go. It is a maze 100 feet of wires but they are all tagged so I know where they go. Lighting will be a challenge as some need resistors soldering and the wires are so fine.

I hope to start on the wiring in

about a weeks time so no playing with my trains then till it is done ;-(

Hornby are sourcing new suppliers for the trains as we know, then hopefully production will get back to normal, I hope for them it is soon, lack of stock and sales must be taking its toll.

I also noticed the trees, which are really nice, are not

made in China. They are made in Taiwan.

I got 4 different sets of lights from kytes lights. There are old gas lamps converted to electric style, some with ladder rails some box type. For in the houses they have some like a ball on top of a stick (trying to describe them) with adjustable pole,

these will slot down the straw and add light to house inside, nice and simple. They won't show much light but they are not intended to just make houses look lived in.

The street lights and one set of station lights are 12v, the other two sets are 6v

so I just need to attach a resistor to live of each. I think if I pair them 2x 6 volt will work on 12 volt either way they should look good.

I still have a station platform to build and several stations but I am not concerned, so long as I get all wires

through the straws and insulate them. Get rid of work under the boards.

I like the cars and burger bar, cars are plastic, burger bar is Oxford die cast. 5 switches will control these in singles and pairs, they are all 12 volt so go direct to my lighting

bus.

I think it should look good, I hope so ;-)
