  1. It has to be a duff cap as they are in parallel. An inductor is in series so if it broke the power path would be broken in either dc or dcc. I have no idea what the tiny wedge shaped device is near the pin with the red wire seemingly attached - marked P1?
  2. R8249 is a basic, basic decoder with little capabikity. It is what it is.
  3. Elite doesn't have any Wifi capability. It talks to RM by USB. There should never be any need to reload RM. Most problems can be sorted by other means. RM only uses Wifi for a handheld device (phone or tablet) to talk to the router which the PC RM is installed on uses for radio comms. Your question isn't giving us the whole story, so we need full details of what you are using.
  4. Ls are inductors and Cs are capacitors.
  5. Do not power up a decoder in the anti-static bag as it is conductive to discharge static. Use a single slip of kapton tape or heat shrink.
  6. You can only read back on a programming track connected to the Elite PROG terminals and only those CVs supported by the R8249 which is very few.
  7. All such data is currently stored in the app. It is being looked at so as to be able to back-up certain app content locally on your device, similar to RM, then maybe later Hornby may be able to tie app custom data to their server so when you login from device to device it takes all the data with it.
  8. Look at the way a USB stick has shrunk in size but expanded in capacity over the years. They are at the point of the plug being bigger than the gubbins. I am sure decoders will continue down a similar road towards everything on a single chip with no external components except the plug.
  9. Ditto speakers could be the flat sides of a loco or tender.
  10. The Elite-Select switch determines how function commands above F12 are handled by the controller with a dongle in use as the app interface. As previously covered in the forum, long and sometimes short DCC addresses can be lost especially when a new profile is loaded as this effectively carries out a CV8 to value 8 reset thus putting the short/long address to 3/100. Making sure you overtype your address even if it is showing in the app and synching the CVs in the editor normally sorts that out.
  11. I have swapped full metal cogged wheels from a diesel front bogie to replace the tyred wheels on a ring-field motor bogie and that worked. I also rigged an extra pickup on that side. I haven't tried that on a steamer as I don't have one and finding full metal wheels could be difficult. Conversion of the various ring-field types is well covered by Brian Lambert whose site is linked to in the useful links sticky post.
  12. Previously covered on the forum with a datasheet.
  13. You can operate points direct from the app by way of bluetooth HM6010 modules which are essentially the same as R8247 acc decoders. The dongle is points capable, its the app that needs updating to provide the user interface and give the choice of new vehicle - loco or accessory. All this is being worked and will be available in the fullness of time, however for now feel free to have a good rant about it.
  14. The steam generator version comes with the correct HM7K decoder profile and should work out of the box as advertised earlier. If it is in bluetooth mode thus preventing any response on defult address 3 then check CV 12 is to DCC value - see the famous manual. But the app is free and offers a numpty proof way of sorting out CVs by simple button clicks on the main track, so no skin off your nose to use it from your phone or tablet.
  15. Ditto - too expensive on all fronts (getting there, parking, entrance fee, feeding) and the remote parking is no good for me who can't walk miles anymore. I read that some folk opt not to pay for parking as the fine was cheaper than the day rate. Our local railway 'museum' which is very small with little to see has gone for pay to park on camera at £1 per hour on the basis folk use their car park to walk on the adjacent Marriotts Way footpath.
  16. Over-current is only provided for motor control, not function output or audio amp.
  17. Try the very recent latest update of today and see what has been fixed.
  18. Not so. The annual catalogue normally only lists that year's new offerings, not the whole range that Hornby makes. This has been very evident in past years and the subject of previous discussion.
  19. Hornby has a habit of dropping things out of sight that are out of stock. That does not mean they are out of program.
  20. My Gauge-master CDU when I was using it was powered from the Aux AC of an old HM2000 which is rated at 18v, so the Select Aux whilst marginal would probably work, given you are using the 4-amp PSU, as a 1-amp wall wart PSU wouldn't have the overhead to run track and accessories.
  21. Exception to the norm - I have had a TTS decoder close wrapped in regular heat shrink in an enclosed coal bunker for years. It doesn't often run for long but it is on track all the time.
  22. Standard fault diagnosis is to determine the root cause of failure, first to see if the unit has failed and if so why, hence rule out finger trouble, especially incorrect power source due to misleading initial advice from Hornby at shows. That advice quickly rescinded in light of user feedback. Next is to rule out the loco and the installation, then it is back to the decoder and the bathtub reliability curve.
  23. The Elite insides have only changed twice at design level that I recall, once for an updated PIC chip that went obsolete then to cater for the spring terminals that were only available in a larger format, meaning one of the Xpressnet ports had to go to make room. That required a motherboard change obviously to shuffle stuff up. Select has also had PIC chip updates requiring an internal facelift, hence v1.6 versus v2.0.
  24. It does sound as if the module has a fault but you could try swapping over the feeder wires at the input end to flip the relay onto the other ‘channel’.
  25. Ditto previous advice. Your question is too vague to answer. I bit like asking a garage over the phone why your car won’t start.
